Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are all high school-aged students who are non-native English speakers. Many of my students speak Spanish as their first language, but I also have students who speak Hebrew, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Vietnamese, and Chinese as their first language. My role is to teach my students English through the lens of reading. Many of my students do not love reading, especially when it is in a new language for them.

My goal is to help my students find joy in reading.

It can be very difficult to find age-appropriate books that are also at an appropriate reading level for new English learners. I have had a lot of success with many of the books that are a part of this project, such as Goosebumps, I Survived, and Who Was/Is. As much as I know my students like to pretend that they do not like reading, I have seen many of them find joy when reading a book such as the one listed above.
