My Students

My class is composed of an inspiring group of 32 fifth graders. Sixteen are bilingual, 4 are immigrants, and and 25 are first generation Americans. This multiculturalism makes our class and school unique and is also a source of pride and strength.

My students come to school every day bursting with a desire to talk, listen and learn.

In writing, they share stories of their family and friends. In math we work together to fine tune strategies for solving some really hard problems. During reading you will find the students working in groups, or gathered in a large circle to discuss big ideas and themes in our literature. Conversation and interaction drive our learning and our day. Yes, they can, and do, work independently and with focus when necessary, but even these periods hum with an energy unique to ten year olds.

My Project

Imagine sitting in a hard immobile chair for six to seven hours. In our class we move as much as possible. The students may sit cross legged on the carpet during whole class instruction, return to their desks for independent work, and afterwards, shift to sitting around a table, on a couch or the floor for collaborative work. However, much of our work requires that we sit.

Hokki stools encourages active seating which allows slight movements and adjustments for the students while they focus and learn.

The wobble stool engages combinations of leg, hip and abdominal muscles. These movements keep the whole body more engaged and healthier. Through DonorsChoose we received two stools, now we need two more for a complete set at a table.
