My Project

Our school garden is an amazing living classroom for our 160 K-6th graders. Every week each child spends at least an hour exploring, engaging with, taking care of, and building on learning experiences in the garden. In the garden, NGSS science concepts come to life, traditional Hawaiian farming practices and perspectives are practiced, and students learn responsibility and see their efforts grow.

Students learn responsibility, connect to scientific phenomena and deepen cultural traditions in the garden through hands-on projects, kilo observations, and garden routines.

The drill and bit set will allow us to build more raised garden beds and help make an infinite number of future projects possible. The garden beds allow students to practice building lepo/soil, a core part of traditional farming in our lava area and allows them to participate in the processes of decomposition and matter cycling through the ecosystem, illustrating many NGSS standards. The gloves, clothespins (to put our gloves away carefully so they last), sickles, loppers, and stainless steel scrubbers will allow the students to malama the garden and greenhouse space during routine garden maintenance. The magnifying glasses and tape measures allow students to practice a core concept of Hawaiian culture, kilo, as part of their garden routines. Students will use the notebooks to record kilo and NGSS phenomena in the garden. The paint will allow students to make signs for our Hawaiian canoe plants, kalo and other flowers and vegetables. Knowing the names and varieties of each plant helps students build relationships with cultural plants like Hāloa/Kalo. The speaker will allow me to play Hawaiian music and set an atmosphere of enjoyment in the māla space.

The items purchased by this generous donation will help students deepen their relationship with the garden space which will help students to become lifelong stewards of the land.
