Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning through games and inquiry allows students to achieve the standards while also having fun. In our classroom, we combine questioning and labs to learn about Science. We want games to add depth to this experience.

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

With the games, we will reinforce what we are studying in a fun way. Students will be able to practice vocabulary as they play. The snap circuit kits will help students get a much deeper understanding of electricity, and since it has such a wide variety of activities, students can continue to create many times. Students can also find an appropriate and fun challenge to engage them. Since the games are all student led, small groups can play while other groups receive enrichment or remedial instruction. Thus, everyone is engaged at their own level at all times. The other resources, including idea books, will help me further introduce engaging questions and activities into the classroom to inspire my curious learners.

With these supplies, students will have another medium through which they can master the science curriculum.
