My Project

Many students in our highly diverse public high school struggle to find books that are engage them, reflect their unique lived experience, and are accessible to given reading levels. Given the recent concerns over the dire status of reading both in Colorado and across the country, it is more important than ever that students find engaging independent reading books.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated existing the struggles that many students have with reading (Goldstein, 20220.

Independent reading, while not a "silver bullet" for students, can provide them with opportunities to grow and strengthen their literacy skills. As the National Council of English Teachers has argued, “the advancement of reading comprehension skills and development of vocabulary are directly tied to the work readers do during independent reading” (NCTE, 2019). This means that independent reading can have a direct and tangible impact on our students as readers.

Our grant will seek to provide students access to a rich classroom library that provides them opportunities to not only read texts that matter to them. We will seek to provide time and space for students to read independently and make tangible connections to the content that we are covering in class. For example, each year, our 10th grade students do a research project on how to make a better future for their communities. They can make connections from the work they are doing in their research projects to the characters in their independent reading books by analyzing how these characters are striving to make a better future.
