This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our small, progressive middle school is located in the heart of New York City's East Village. Founded in 2001, TSMS is a learning community with rigorous academic standards that honor individual learning styles and build skills within a meaningful context.

Like the East Village itself, my students are a very diverse, quirky, opinionated bunch.

I teach two sections of 7th grade Humanities, a total of 60 students. Along with abundant energy, the students bring their own learning styles and needs.

My Project

We are so grateful to be back in school, learning in each other's company. However, after more than a year away from the classroom, many students are noticing how challenging it is to stay seated for such long periods of time. In response to their very reasonable need for movement and choice, I have been rethinking my classroom design. My large classroom allows for multiple seating areas, including a meeting area with benches and several cozy reading nooks among the bookshelves.

These "wiggle stools" will offer students additional seating choices because they work perfectly at our classroom tables.

Many students prefer these active stools to the traditional school chairs, because they can work at their tables while still rocking, bouncing, or swaying out their extra energy. I have a few of these stools already, and they are in high demand! Please help us add more of these special seats to our classroom.
