Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 4th grade teacher in a urban school. Within our diverse school 77% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and minority enrollment is 91% of the student body; the majority being Hispanic. My classroom is a true melting pot with students of different race, class, disability, and religion. This is what makes us unique and why I love teaching where I do.

From an early age urban children are confronted with a series of obstacles in their attempts to meet personal, academic, and social success, therefore, it is my job as their teacher to build bridges, so they can navigate through these obstacles.

Since the school year has not started yet, I have not met my students. When I do meet them it will be bitter sweet as it will be remotely. I want so badly to be in the classroom. I miss the excitement in the mornings, the hugs and smiles, the Aha! Moments, but most of all the family we create in the classroom. We always have our ups and downs, good days and bad days, but that's what makes our classroom family.

My Project

We will use these books for guided reading, read aloud's, and in our classroom library.

Students will relate to and be inspired by the characters in the books.

Because of the diversity within this literature, the students will learn about the differences of others. Representation matters! Not only will my students be reading books they can relate to, but books starring POC, disabled, and all gender characters.

All represented just may give this generation the ability to use their voices and stand up for themselves and the people around them.
