My Project

Working as a kindergarten “English as a New Language” teacher in the heart of Queens has been so very rewarding! I am able to work with students from many different backgrounds and cultures. We begin in September, speaking different languages and struggling to find ways to communicate. Through the year we work together, master the art of communication, find shared interests, and become a family. The Cricut Joy Xtra and its supplies would allow me to employ more visual communication aids and make the students’ transition to English easier.

One of the first shared interests we find is through the arts.

Drawing is our first classroom “language.” The students come together early on in the year to create group crafts and projects. This is their first attempt at shared communication. The Cricut Joy Xtra and its supplies would open up so many possibilities for more meaningful crafts and art activities.

As a single teacher in a class of 25, it is often hard for me to create the materials needed for projects. Most often these materials are created on my own time and at my own cost. Many of the students are unable to write and cut at the beginning of the school year. I have to cut and create most of the learning materials for each project. This machine would help me to prepare student hands-on materials, simplify multicultural communication, create visual posters and bulletin boards, and be able to complete more multimodal activities with my students.
