This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"Mr. Williams do you have any snacks?", "Mr. Williams I'm hungry can you get me something from the store?", Mr. Williams can I have a piece of your granola bar?" These are questions I get asked almost everyday at my school. I'm the Physical Education teacher here in Manhattan, New York. My classes are mixed grades, 50 students to 1 teacher, so I see all of our students by the end of each week. It breaks my heart hearing that a child is hungry or that they didn't get a chance to eat. I do my best to buy extra snacks or food for my students when I can but it's not consistent.

Learning becomes challenging when students are hungry.

Their minds aren't tuned into the learning and they easily become frustrated and weary without food. I've had students come into my class and separate themselves in a corner or not want to participate in activities. When I walk over to talk to them I always ask, "well did you eat anything for the day?" The answer is always "no" or "I was late"

Students don't have money to purchase snacks to keep them fed throughout the day. These items I'm requesting will support students learning by satisfying their hunger with a simple snack. This will maintain their focus and active engagement in class without the feeling of discomfort caused by hunger. My goal is to feed any student that's hungry, because no child deserves to suffer the pain of hunger. Our students work tirelessly in all their classes. At the high school level their maturing bodies need sustenance. Our kids care about their education and despite their everyday hardships, they still up. Any help is much appreciated.
