This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember a time when you actually had to go to a library to do research in actual BOOKS? I want my students to leave my classroom with research skills beyond using the Internet to find out about the world around them.

My students are in a self-contained, special education (bilingual) class in a high-need community public school.

They are in the third and fourth grades and are getting ready to take their state exams this year. My goal with them this year (other than raising reading levels and increasing math skills) is to get them thinking beyond tests and learning some of the skills that they will need in order to succeed in the world of academia beyond my classroom. This means learning how to use an encyclopedia to find information and writing research reports. The magazines are also a different way of finding information. Basically, what I would like for them to know is that there is a world beyond the Nintendo Wii and their computers - an interesting world that they could learn more about. I would love for them to become information finders, not just sit & take in what is taught to them - they should be critical thinkers.

My Project

Donor, I would really like to teach the children how to find information from various sources. Many of them automatically go straight to the Internet and copy and paste whatever text they find and call that research. It's the quick and dirty way to get rid of a writing assignment. It's all they have ever known in this technological era, but they will need actual research skills when they get to middle school, high school and beyond. These are skills that I remember learning as early as the second grade when we had to write our "compositions" on various topics and I would love to pass them on to my class. With these magazines and Encyclopedia Britannica materials, I hope to inspire my students to learn more and see research as something they can do creatively. They could look in more than one place to find information. Now, I am also asking for the Encyclopedia Britannica DVD
