This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a world of smart phones, tablets, and computers, the skills needed to do research using books have been emphasized less and less. To help my students gain these valuable skills, a set of encyclopedias in the classroom would be beneficial.

I serve 23 amazing third grade students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Our school is a small neighborhood public school that continually strives to educate its students the best they can with the limited tools we are provided with. My students love to learn and learn best when they are actively engaged. They are hard working, motivated learners who enjoy working on projects and doing research on a wide variety of topics.

My Project

Surprisingly, most of my students have never seen a set of encyclopedias or for that matter even heard of them! Since most research is done via the Internet these days most of my students are gathering information from sites that can be inaccurate and in the majority of times not geared towards the children using them. In order for my students to gain the valuable skill of researching and citing a variety of resources that can be counted on as factual and reliable, encyclopedias would be a priceless addition to our classroom.

Third grade students in California are expected to learn how to use a variety of resource materials, such as encyclopedias, unfortunately the school district simply cannot provide them for us.

With a set of encyclopedias, my classroom will learn that research is not done by simply entering the material one is learning in a search engine and relying on the results that appear but rather by using these educational teaching tools to read and gather their own conclusions and answers.
