I serve a spirited group of students at my 6th-8th grade middle school as their school librarian. My students are funny, curious, and very opinionated. They represent a range of neighborhoods and wards from across Washington D.C. Over 3/4 of the students served qualify for the federal free-lunch program.
My students are voracious readers who enjoy books that represent subjects where they can be entertained, learn and grow as individuals.
Since returning to in-person learning, I would like to support the schoolwide focus of providing meaningful lessons and activities. Overall, my students have a strong desire to read for personal enjoyment, learn more about different cultures and people through the genres that highlight adventure and great storytelling.
My Project
My students enjoy creating and making projects in the #TrojanLMCMakerspace Lab. They enjoying reading about STEM and STEAM-related projects and are eager to test them out in the Makerspace Lab. These experiences encourage students to think critically, analytically and expand their knowledge base on various subjects.
I want my students to have the experience of creating dynamic STEM and STEAM projects through the use of the Cricut machine.
This experience will support learning across the school and district curriculum. Moreover, these projects will reinforce lessons taught in content-level classrooms.
My ultimate hope is to inspire students to pursue STEM and STEAM-related careers. This experience of using this valuable machine will support that effort and encourage curiosity.
