This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach small group reading intervention to students in grades 1-6, and I also support teachers in using research based practices to support struggling readers in the general education classroom. Many of my students lack the foundational skills needed to read at their grade level, whether due to a learning disability, poor first instruction during the pandemic, or learning a new language. Some students are able to make good progress as soon as they receive the appropriate instruction, while for others my intervention group is a step towards getting them the special education services that they need.

Students who are struggling to read often also need support with focus, motivation, and confidence in academic settings.

During our 30 minute sessions, I ask students to work very hard at something that is already very challenging for them. Holding their interest and making it fun and engaging is key. Flourescent light blockers and string lights will help create a calming, less stimulating environment for students with sensory needs. And while the materials we use to learn to read are fairly basic- paper, pencils, post-its, markers, whiteboards- things like raffle tickets, stickers, and spinners really help to keep students on task and focused on their goals.
