My Project

Thank you for considering this classroom project and partnership with Meals-on-Wheels. During the first weeks of school in September we study Unit One: The Power of Influence. Most of the Unit is how we are influenced by people, events and the media, with a focus on the persuasive elements ethos, pathos and logos. During the last week I'd like to address how the teens themselves are a powerful and influential source by modeling how we can reach out to others and evoke positive change. We will have a short lesson on letter writing which will lead in to the next Unit. My students will pick a positive sticker, decorate and write a card to someone who receives Meals-on-Wheels telling about why this positive sticker is meaningful message to them and wish the reader well and encourage them to adopt an affirmation, too. The cards will be delivered anonymously with the meals one week.

Students learn that positive affirmations are powerful when used consistently and can help boost self-esteem and lower stress while helping others to feel more confident and relaxed, and empower them to achieve goals or overcome obstacles.

During the Holiday season, students will again reach out with a card, decorated with winter landscapes and well wishes following up on how their positive affirmation is working in their life. The cards will be verified and be delivered with the meals. The students will participate in a poll study at the end of the Semester, covering the two card activities where they reached out to participants of Meals-on-Wheels, and identify their thoughts and conclusions.
