My Students

Bright. Kind. Open-minded. Critical thinkers. These are just a few words that describe my extraordinary students. Located in Chicago, my school serves a population of students of which 51% come from low-income households. Because of my students unique interests and strong feelings about the world in which they live, we focus much of our time together questioning and critiquing various systems of power and inequity, especially when we consider our communities.

My role as a facilitator of learning goes beyond our classroom community, and my students are encouraged to critically examine their identities, their communities, and their values.

By facilitating my students' learning of various social justice topics, I hope to help them develop a stronger sense of belonging in this city, country, and the world. They know that their voices matter!

Furthermore, our school's attendance rate is 94%, which is higher than the average rate of any high school in our community. This means our students want to be here, and they want to learn, question, and critique.

My Project

Recently, my students and I had a discussion about "single stories" based on a TED Talk by Chimamanda Adichie. Students shared how society has a single story about them based on various power structures (socio-economic class, race, etc.). From this talk, we were able to apply "single stories" to a variety of texts and current events.

By viewing this film, my students will be able to see marginalized and under-represented voices take "center screen", and understand how they can become agents of positive change in their own communities.

THUG dismantles the single stories (stereotypes) people have about Black love, families, and communities. It is a text that redefines what it means to be Black in America today, and what happens when a young person believes in the power of their voice.
