My Students

Hi All! .

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science and Intro to programming to high school seniors.

My students have responded really well to the curriculum and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 4 years.

In my AP CS course last year, we doubled enrollment to two full sections.

Seeing people that my students can connect with represented in my physical classroom space and curriculum is key. Last year we celebrated that 66% of my students who took my AP CS class identify as female, 71% identify as Hispanic/Latinx, 26% identify as Black, and 3% identify as Asian. In my curriculum, we are focusing on social justice in tech, what it means to be a digital citizen and what the inalienable rights of digital citizens should be.

In my Intro to programming elective, my students learn JavaScript and how to draw and animate on the computer, culminating in an animated short film festival, in the winter. My students also learn HTML & CSS in the Spring and create dynamic web-pages using adobe creative suite and other web builders.

My Project

We are having major issues with audio feedback, when students are in the same digital class while sitting in the same school room. Students need headphones with a microphone to participate in class discussions on google meets. Without headsets, an endless and intense audio feedback loop forces these students to not unmute. They can participate in the chat and digital resources, but can't voice their opinions and participate the way other students can. These headphones will be used by 12th graders to access their digital classes from the school building. We hope to supply any student without their own headsets with a pair. They will use these headsets in every one of their programmed classes.

This will help our students participate fully, build the necessary soft skills to be successful in college and career, and navigate their senior year schedule to master concepts in their English, Computer Science, Robotics, Government and Language courses.
