This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
One of the best ways to get students intellectually engaged in learning is to get them curious. Our reading units are based on an overarching theme. I want to start two of our units with wonder bags.
Students will explore the wonder bags at the beginning of the units.
I will not tell them what the theme of the unit is. Instead, they will have to talk with their group and come up with predictions based on the items in front of them.
One unit, healthy choices, will have a bag filled with items that directly relate to the texts we will be reading. These items include gardening materials, trees, fruit, and toothbrushes.
The other unit is all about the history of Chicago. The items in the bag will relate back to the Chicago Fire, Ida B. Wells, the Great Migration, and American Indians (past and present).
