My Students

I am lucky to be able to teach Ceramics at a larger public school (around 1100 students). Each year I have between 200-300 students. After getting to know my kids over the past few years I am constantly astounded by their eagerness to design, create, and give. Many students come to my classroom outside of class to work on extra projects they are proud to give families and friends.

I work to challenge my students and they exceed expectations every day through their creativity, ownership, and generosity in their work.

They begin to gain confidence in their work after just one semester and many have gone on to sell pieces to teachers and the community. Knowing my students, I am eager to expand upon their nature and provide an opportunity to give back to the community.

My Project

Our school works to create a community of support, where students are leading the way. Our local food bank provides two meals a day for students who have food insecurity. They also provide food for a "backpack" program where students can have food to eat over the weekend. This year, my students are going to give their time in order to create bowls that are "food safe" to be sold at our multicultural potluck dinner in the spring.

Proceeds from the dinner are going to go back to the food bank to help continue their programs that in turn will support hundreds of students at our school.

Students will come to the ceramics room outside of school in order to create their bowls, and glaze (decorate) them. It is completely student led: students who have taken ceramics before have volunteered to coach those students who have not had the opportunity yet.
