This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are inquisitive, thoughtful, and eager to see themselves in the stories they read. Many of them come from immigrant families and are navigating the complexities of identity, expectations, and belonging—just like Julia, the protagonist of I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. Having access to this novel will provide them with a powerful mirror to reflect on their own experiences and a window into the lives of others.

By reading I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, my students will engage in meaningful discussions about family expectations, mental health, and the pressures of growing up between cultures.

This book will also help them develop critical thinking and literacy skills, all while making reading more relevant and engaging. A class set will allow us to read together, analyze themes, and create a shared learning experience that fosters connection and understanding.

The goals for this project is to provide my students with a novel that reflects their lived experiences and sparks important conversations, strengthen their reading comprehension and analytical skills through discussions and writing assignments. This project will also cultivate empathy and self-awareness as they will see themselves and their peers in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

My students are resilient, determined, and full of stories waiting to be told. They bring diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and dreams into the classroom, and I want to ensure they have access to literature that honors and validates their experiences. With your support, we can make sure they feel seen, heard, and inspired through the power of books.
