Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am teaching a class where students will learn about the art of comics and analyze their social messages.

I work in a school with the highest need and lowest income students in the Bronx, New York.

Many are below grade level in reading. The school is mostly black and Hispanic. But that's not the full picture; my students have energy and enthusiasm that I want to foster.

My Project

At a base level, comics are an enjoyable medium that enable low-level readers to practice reading. More than that, though, the comics I have selected feature heroes of color, which my students need to see. Students will be analyzing how these comics use the graphic medium as well as the social messages they convey.

Every minute that a student spends reading is a minute well spent.

These stories allow students to envision themselves as transcending the often dehumanizing reality that they face. There are too many white, male superheroes; my students need to see people like them.
