Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach co-taught Language Arts and Reading to a passionate group of 8th grade students. This means I work with a special education teacher to support each of our student's needs and learning styles. The majority of our students come from low-income households, speak English as a second language, and read far below grade level (many of whom have learning disabilities or IEPs). Hence, our students often lack confidence within themselves when they walk into the classroom at the beginning of the year.

With the support of my co-teacher, we work hard to not only establish a safe, welcoming, and silly space for our students to grow, but we also work tirelessly to find engaging and relevant material for our students to find the joy in reading or writing.

Our students truly begin to let their guard down and find their voice when given a book relevant to their own lives and interests.

My Project

With the school year starting remotely, it is now more important than ever to ensure our students have high interest books by authors that reflect their own backgrounds and cultures. It is our goal to make our physical and digital classroom a community of independent readers. Although it will take immense planning, we hope to organize a system through which our students can check out our classroom library books until we return to school. Please help us take the first step by supplying our classroom library with these excellent titles!
