Empowering Voices in Speech Therapy with Technology

My Project

As a Speech and Language Pathologist in a NYC elementary school, I am constantly striving to meet the diverse and individualized needs of my students. I work with students who face various communication challenges, including articulation, language development, and social interaction. Every student deserves the resources and tools that allow them to be successful. I aspire to create an equitable learning environment that meets the needs of all my students. Having a Speech iPad and Apple Pencil dedicated to the specific individualized needs of my students would greatly benefit my students.

For children without disabilities, technology makes things easier; for children with disabilities, technology makes things possible.

iPads offer a plethora of engaging and interactive apps and programs designed to support speech therapy goals, such as enhancing articulation, social communication, literacy, and reading comprehension. iPads can also be used for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for students with autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, delayed speech, or those that are classified as non-verbal. An iPad will assist my special needs students who are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. Research indicates that engaging multiple senses enhances learning and improves information retention.

Additionally, access to an iPad will support my ability to evaluate students for AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices and will enable them to practice various programs to identify the most appropriate program. Access to an iPad will streamline the often lengthy AAC assessment process.

Your support will go a long way in helping us encourage and celebrate our diverse learners. Your contribution will directly impact students by giving them access to innovative tools that build confidence, improve communications, and foster independence. Together, we can help them find their voice!
