My Project

At Harbor School, our Lit Club is more than just a book club—it's a safe space where literature becomes a powerful tool for promoting inclusivity, facilitating dialogue about diversity, and addressing social justice issues. We're seeking your support to expand our options with contemporary, engaging books that reflect and celebrate the diverse identities of our students.

Harbor School is a unique microcosm of diversity:

-- Student population: 65% male, 35% female

-- Racial/ethnic demographics: 42% Hispanic, 26% White, 18% Black/African American, 5% Asian, 10% Other

This diversity is our strength, but it also presents challenges. We've observed an increase in racially and culturally insensitive incidents, highlighting the urgent need for intentional programming that facilitates conversations about social justice, community diversity, and inclusion.

Literature and identity are closely linked. Books can:

* Help young readers explore their own identities (sexual, racial, religious, or cultural)

* Provide mirrors that reflect students' experiences and windows and doors into different cultures

* Encourage respectful and critical discussions about social identities

* Challenge and expand worldviews

Our mixed-grade Lit Club meets weekly to read and discuss identity-based literature. We also:

--> Attend literary events

--> Host author visits

--> Explore libraries and bookstores across the city

Through these activities, we aim to:

+ Create a nurturing space for sensitive questions and discussions

+ Help students feel seen and valued

+ Address race-based trauma through a trauma-informed lens

+ Encourage understanding of how collective identities are formed and intersect

With your help, I can purchase contemporary books that address themes of identity. Some of these books have been requested by club members, and others I have selected. By supporting our project, you're not just buying books, you're helping empower voices and strengthen a community.
