Empowering Teachers to Identify and Challenge Racism and Implicit Bias

I need a library of resources to help other teachers become more aware of how racism and implicit bias negatively impact the academic and emotional well being of our high school students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has approximately 400 high school students who live in mainly the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. The vast majority of our students are Latinx and of African descent. We also have a handful of students of Middle Eastern and Asian descent.

The racial make up of our teachers is quite different from that of our students.

Most of us are white and of Asian descent. This difference between the racial identity of the classroom teachers and that of our students has led us to begin discussing the impact of racism and implicit bias on our teaching and on our interaction with the students. We have a lot more to learn and a lot of changes to make.

My Project

The books included in this project will be used to create an Equity in Education library in the teacher's resource room. Teachers will be encouraged to borrow the books so that they can take time in their own space to begin gaining an understanding of how racism and implicit bias impact our teaching.

Teachers having access to books about racism and implicit bias will hopefully make it easier for us to identify steps we can take to break the cycle that continues to impact our students in a negative way.

Teachers will only be able to make changes in our words and actions after we begin to learn and reflect on ourselves. These requested books will hopefully help us to be able to do so. Our professional shift away from racism and implicit bias will create a better environment for our New York City students.
