This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students at our Elementary have expressed a strong desire for more diverse and engaging art activities. While we currently meet this need with traditional classroom projects such as drawing, coloring, and limited painting, I believe there is a greater opportunity to enhance our art education offerings. As an educator with a background in the arts, I am committed to providing my students with a more expansive and inclusive approach to artistic expression.

Our Elementary serves a diverse student body, and it is my goal to diversify our art education to reflect the varied abilities and cultural backgrounds of our students.

Just as no two students learn in the same way, no two students should be constrained in their avenues of artistic expression.

Through targeted projects such as body casting and still-life charcoal drawings, I aim to broaden students' artistic capacities, introduce them to alternative artistic methods, and offer opportunities for them to develop real-world, transferable skills. It is essential to approach art education with the same rigor and breadth as other disciplines. Just as we teach multiple methods for solving a math problem, we must also teach that art is not confined to colored pencils and glitter. Art is a powerful reflection of the artist, and there is no better way to encapsulate this than through the process of body casting.

At our Elementary, our students are no more or less exceptional than those in other communities. However, when compared to more affluent districts, our students have fewer educational opportunities, particularly in the arts. Despite this, they demonstrate an overwhelming enthusiasm for exploring alternative methods of art production and for learning about non-traditional, successful artists. It is crucial that we provide them with these opportunities to ensure their artistic growth is as comprehensive and diverse as their potential.
