Empowering middle school students to learn and appreciate all people in any walk of life is my goal for this new diverse and inclusive library. Although Social Studies is not primarily and English class, we do enough reading and writing that prompts us to think about many different perspectives. A part of class begins with reading to increase literacy among all my students and not many of them have a book to read that might represent where they come from and who they are.
My goal for this project is to collect an inclusive and diverse list of books so that students can have the opportunity to read and learn about the diverse groups within and outside of our classroom.
My students are such a big and diverse class that they often struggle to find and read voices like their own. That is something that I am striving to change with using new curricula to teach them history through multiple perspectives. With the help and addition of these books, my students will be empowered to enact social change through close study of nonfiction and fictional stories.
