Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We can express feelings through art in a way that words cannot quite do. Most students in my school fall below the poverty level and many face obstacles every day, including financial difficulty, early pregnancy, and gang violence. Art is one of the things that keeps them engaged in school daily.

My students are creative and passionate about learning.

We teach using alternative teaching methods, meaning students are expected to do more than pass tests. They have to express their learning both in the real world traditionally as well as through art and music. This education model keeps our attendance high and helps to ensure that the colleges that students attend are highly selective. This project would be a great way of "empowering students through art"! My students would benefit from this project in several ways. First, they would be allowed to express what they may be unable to put in words by using photography. Additionally, they will acquire photography skills that could be used in a future career.

My Project

The goal for this project is to establish a creative expressions class that helps students to express their hardest emotions. In order to establish this new class, I am asking for Canon EOS Rebel T5 18.0 MP CMOS professional Digital Camera SLR Kit, a cop of Canon For Dummies, and a STK Canon EP-e10 Battery. Many of my students have endured traumatic experiences that they have trouble processing and talking about. Writing about these issues is sometimes difficult because the students do not fully understand what they are feeling. Being able to represent these emotions using objects outside of themselves often helps them to better communicate what they are feeling. Students will be able to photography equipment to express what they have difficulty articulating.

This project will allow us to have the materials to bring this project to fruition.
