My Students

Imagine not being able to hear, understand, and communicate with your family on a daily basis? Missing the incidental conversations or the oral history being passed down from Grandparent to child? This is what my students face daily at home...deprivation of language, social, and life experiences.

My students are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and all are minorities.

They all communicate through American Sign Language. They are in First through Third grades. All of them are behind in reading and writing, yet they are excited to come to school, to learn, and experience life. They are visual learners especially when it comes to reading and writing. Our class is located in Northeast Los Angeles in a regular education campus that houses two Magnets schools as well. Our school has housed the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program for over 20 years.

My Project

After reading and learning about the Native Americans' way of life in America my students will use art to imitate the life and work of the Native Americans. My students will create their own mini-rugs using the Peglooms and yarn to weave like the Natives have done across the ages. They will learn the language necessary to follow oral directions and to explain how they recreated their mini-rugs. After researching the various Native American tribes across the US and the styles of pottery my students will create their own clay pots and paint them to express their own life experiences.

My students will not only experience Art but they will be empowered by learning language and expressing their experiences through American Sign Language.

These students are not only learning academics but social skills in a fully accessible environment. They will be proud to share their Art and be empowered to express themselves to their families that have limited skills in American Sign Language.
