Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine learning science in a foreign language and all the teacher can do is point to a book and write on a board? Physical Science is about dropping eggs to discover gravity and forces. I can give more hands-on time to my students if I could project big bold notes and clips to introduce it.

My students live in North Philadelphia.

They are besieged by astronomical budget woes. It now seems clear that our charter high school's first round of freshmen will graduate before the public school district can get back in the black. You see, we started the charter last year. We came on strong to provide a school with positive school culture and we were successful. We met a debris filled school in August and changed our literacy rating by June. Our classrooms were bright, happy and quiet. We stopped the fights in the hallways on day one and got the kids into class and learning. We were tasked with turning around a failing school and we made significant inroads. Now it's crunch time. My students need to be competitive and that means streamlining the instruction and opening up the class to discovery and practice. To begin this journey my students need a projector. They show up everyday in a dress shirt, neck tie, slacks and black shoes and deserve an equally professional presentation.

My Project

An LCD projector brings diagrams to life, shows clips from Mythbusters and other scientifically minded programs. Imagine the instantaneous learning that happens when you show a solid, iron block literally floating on a puddle of liquid mercury. It challenges my students to step up to a true idea of the meaning of density. Imagine my efficiency as a teacher if I can circulate and leave the projector and my smartphone to reveal the notes and images up front. Struggling students stay accountable and no student is left to fade away because I had spend time writing my notes on my board. For my ESL and special ed students, it means that I can instantaneously express a vocabulary word with a picture or video. It literally means the world to them. I will teach my students this year. I am capable of meeting that expectation under almost any circumstance. I would just prefer to have some time with my students to squeeze in some meaningful experiments and boy oh boy wouldn't they prefer it too!

Education is struggling to meet the needs of the students in this country.

Make your dollar count by choosing a project where a school, its teachers and students already rose from the ashes just enough to prove we want it and can do it. 95% of my students participated in our school science fair last year. My administration rubbed dimes together, I rubbed dimes together, my students brought in what they could and we MADE it happen. We have the effort and heart, all we need is a little boost.
