Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They say that an ELL student or student of poverty needs to hear a new vocabulary word over 80 times before it becomes a regular part of their schema or personal vocabulary. While my students come each day expecting me to teach them, they do not expect to be successful. I hope to turn that around.

When teaching at a K-5 elementary school packed to the gills with nearly 800 students, it is hard to make sure that each student is able to access the materials they need to reach their goals.

At our high-poverty school, with nearly 50% of our students qualifying for ELL services and over 83% of our students on free and reduced price lunch, it is hard to individualize instruction. My students come to my 4th grade classroom reading anywhere from pre-K to the fifth grade level. Those that are 1-2 grade levels behind are the majority. Many of my students are unaware of the world outside of their apartment complexes and the 5 block radius around our school. When talking about their city, their state, and their country, they have very little background knowledge to build on, besides the crime they see daily. Making connections in our classroom, helping them believe in themselves and their success, and building their knowledge of the world are my biggest priorities.

My Project

My students are in need of high-interest, leveled reading materials with picture support, in order to visualize and comprehend what they are reading. Much of our work together is leveled and differentiated, to meet their very diverse needs. While I have built up a sizable library of fiction and nonfiction books in our classroom library over the years, I see the need for my students to build their comprehension skills in order to better understand what they are reading. These leveled book sets will help me to guide small reading groups of 4-6 students at a time, as well as give them the practice they need to show growth and feel successful. As they leave the whole group lesson to independently read each day, they will need to practice the skills and strategies that we are learning together. The activity cards and stations will give them that hands-on practice in reading, vocabulary, and grammar that they each need so badly.

If I had to choose one subject that was integral to student success in all other areas of school, I would have to say it is reading.

My students that struggle in reading struggle in almost every other area. They need various reading skills in order to understand word problems in math, historical events, and the process of writing. If they can read, they can empower themselves to learn and grow throughout their lives. I hope to encourage life-long learners through teaching reading comprehension.
