This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Dylan is a 7th-grade student who is very involved in his school and community. For the past several years Dylan has participated in the schools' volleyball team, basketball team and is a bass player in our schools' drumline.

Dylan is the Vice-President of the DFYIT Club-Peer Counselors and of Castaway Club which is an outdoor club established last school year upon his relentless request to have a fishing club. Dylan was nominated on 3 different occasions to The Do The Right Thing Program in elementary school for his charismatic ways of helping others, commitment to his community and ability to keep his school and friends safe.

Through the DFYIT Club and the Drumline Dylan has volunteered countless hours in the community. At school, he has done over 50 classroom presentations yearly on a variety of topics ranging from depression, acceptance, suicide awareness, bullying prevention, Sandy Hook Say Somehitng, drugs, alcohol, and autism just to name a few. He has participated in numerous community events such as Live Like Bella, Cystic Fibrosis Walk, Out of Darkness Walk (Suicide prevention), Autism Walk and many more. He has also volunteered at Paws 2 Care and The Village South.

As the school year begins, our Student Services Team is working on several different projects, one of which incorporates empowering our youth to create change within their school through community service. We firmly believe that the earlier we teach our youth about giving and helping others, we will increase their chances of being productive citizens today and in their future. We currently have about one thousand, seven hundred students in our middle school. About 85% are on free or reduced lunch. Yearly we average about 30 to 40 homeless or in transition students. Basically, children who do not have a stable place they call home. Unfortunately, money is not abundant among the students and their parents. Thankfully, you don't need a lot of money to make a difference in a person's life. This school year we want to arm our 30 students with basic supplies that they need to succeed in school.

In Their Own Words

Last school year I established The Jaguar Pantry. This pantry was stocked with cereal all year long for our needy youth. It was placed in the main office and students were allowed to go by and take what they needed. I was shocked to see how much need there is in my school. This school year I wanted to add to the supplies that our students are provided by helping stock The Gardens Boutique which is a place where our needy students can get school supplies, shoes, clothes, uniforms and dressed up for Prom! A prom is an important event for all 8th graders and we should all be given the opportunity to go and look nice. Through The Gardens Boutique, the girls are dressed in beautiful gowns, shoes, purses, and jewelry. Hair and makeup are also done. The end result is... a Cinderella story. The boys also get fitted with a tux from a local tux store.

Through my DFYIT Club-Peer Counselors, I will empower my friends to get involved and think of others instead of themselves. We already do a lot in our community but I feel like we really need to help our own student body. There is a huge need and I want to make sure each Jaguar has the basic things that we sometimes take for granted.

This project is important to me because last school year I found out a good friend of mine was living in someone's home and sleeping on the floor with almost nothing to eat. He came to school dirty, hungry and tired. Once we spoke to Mrs. Garcia the Trust Counselor we were able to get him the basic stuff needed and help for his family. He is the reason I came up with the idea of The Jaguar Pantry. The problem my project will solve is that kids like my friend don't have to be embarrassed in class saying, I don't have a binder or composition book because my family can't afford it. Or they won't have to feel ashamed of not looking or smelling clean because they don't have deodorant and other necessary things.
