Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my third year working in a Title I, low-income district. I am moving from a third-grade monolingual teaching position to a third-grade dual-language position. The majority of students, about 75%, are English Language Learners. Our district is moving away from the traditional monolingual classroom, and beginning to focus more on the dual-language program due to our demographics and the positive outcomes of the program.

Some of our students speak both Spanish and English, some students are stronger in one language, some students can speak both languages, but have difficulty reading and writing in the other, and some students emigrate from different countries knowing little to no English.

The purpose of the dual-language program is to support students acquisition of bilingualism and biliteracy. Bilingualism and biliteracy are extremely beneficial skills to acquire and they open the doors for so many wonderful opportunities for our incredible students. The students are taught literacy and content in both English and Spanish, 50/50 throughout the day. Teachers implement bridging about every three weeks in order for students to engage in the analysis of the two languages; this allows students to transfer the content knowledge learned in one language to the other language.

My Project

Dual-language programs are about supporting students in bilingualism and biliteracy: reading, writing, speaking, and listening in more than one language. Students are strengthening and acquiring new content and literacy in their native language while strengthening and acquiring a new language.

Bridging is a part of the dual-language program, it allows students to engage in the analysis of both languages, as well as transferring their academic content knowledge in their native language to their newly acquired language.

This "Teaching Cart" will support the bridging of both languages. As a whole group, we can sit together, learn together, and explore the transfer of content from one language to the next. Because dual-language is split into two languages, this "Teaching Cart" will be symbolic to the connection of both Spanish and English. Bridging is an essential part of the dual-language program.
