I am the only social worker at a new charter elementary school which empowers students through relevant, hands-on learning experiences. My colleagues and I focus on educating the "whole child" through a curriculum that incorporates academic excellence, character development, and a love of "hands-on" learning. Our school serves a population that is 98% African-American or Latino and 83% low-income. Our school opened in 2007 and currently serves grades K-3. We will grow one grade per year until serving 450 students, grades K-8, in 2013.

As a charter school, we operate on less per pupil funding than traditional public schools in the same district. As such, we do not have the budget money to purchase some of the basic supplies that would be helpful to me as I work with the neediest students.

Research strongly supports the effectiveness of play therapy with young children who face emotional challenges. Each week, I work with several groups focusing on various topics. I use play therapy techniques during most of my interactions with the students. The kids look forward to days that they get to play games. During my undergraduate internship, I had access to therapeutic games and found those games to be extremely effective in teaching social strategies. Having access to "The Social Skills Board Game Set" would greatly increase my effectiveness in working with some of our most emotionally challenged students. The set includes three games that relate directly to the groups I facilitate. "Escape from Anger Island" and "Impulse Control" are games that would be beneficial to the two anger management groups that I lead. Both games teach concrete skills to handle impulses and anger in an appropriate manner. Additionally, the "Friendship" game gives the children a chance to explore new ways to make friends, be a good friend, and resolve arguments. This game would be an effective resource for the two friendship groups that I lead.

Guided play is a highly effective way for children to learn emotional control and the skills they will need to be successful in life.
