My Students

At home my students face...deprivation of language, social, and life experiences because they are deaf. But not in our class. Our hands are in constant motion signing our conversations. Our eyes move from Teacher to student and back. We learn best through hands-on experiences and socialization

My students are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and all are minorities.

Some of them wear hearing aids, some have cochlear implants, and some wear BAHAs. Some can talk to some degree while others are still learning but they all communicate through American Sign Language. They are in First through Third grades. All of them are behind in reading and writing, yet they are excited to come to school, to learn, and experience life. They are visual learners especially when it comes to reading, writing, science and social studies. They need hands-on experiences to really incorporate content knowledge learned into their daily expressive language. Our class is one of three Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing classes located in Northeast Los Angeles in a regular education campus that houses two Magnets schools as well. Our school has housed the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program for over 20 years.

My Project

We have recruited a late-deafened Latina Artist to give art lessons in American Sign Language to our Deaf students. We are all excited to begin but we need supplies. First, we will begin with Native American art by continuing our clay pottery unit and begin painting with nature using a variety of materials available in the environment. We will use shells and beads to make jewelry as the Native Americans did long ago. We will learn to use only what we need from Nature and be one with Mother Earth. Then move onto Deaf Art, where we will make sand paintings to express our lives...both the joy and frustrations of being Deaf. We will make hand sculptures expressing the importance of communication starting at infancy. We will make tempera and watercolor paintings expressing our Deafness. Finally, we will have an Art Gallery to show our work to the other classes. We will communicate with those around us what we learned about Native Americans as well as about ourselves and our Deafness.

Your donations will improve our classroom by providing hands-on instructional materials and instruction in a language that is fully accessible by our students...American Sign Language.

In turn our students will gain knowledge and confidence in themselves as a Deaf person and be able to impart that knowledge to others using American Sign Language. They will have gained a wealth of knowledge through hands-on interactive activities and hopefully gained a new way to express their Deafness.
