My Students

Several times a year, our school is visited by guests who are positive role models that inspire and excite the students! But sometimes, emergency vehicles and news trucks visit our school, and not for positive reasons. This needs to change - and the children can be part of that change.

Our school is nestled in a poverty-stricken area - where gunshots ring out any time of the day, and where the crime rate is high and unemployment is low.

Violence is a part of the environment, and hearing gunfire is almost too commonplace. As such, police cars cruise the neighborhood, and have visited our school. We have had to practice "lock down" drills, and unfortunately, the drills have not always been drills. Imagine the stress and impact this places on the psyche of these young children. The children come to school ready to learn and hopeful to escape the harshness of their reality. We teachers do all we can to make our environment safe and happy, but as our society dictates, danger can strike at any time. This is exacerbated in the neighborhood around our school. Still, the children play with friends at recess, laugh at their own antics, and maintain a positive outlook that their futures can be ameliorated through a sound education.

My Project

Imagine if the children could tell their own stories! Empowering the children through art! The children often do not see themselves represented in the media, and when they do, it's often the most dismal side of their existence. There are no happy stories on the 6:00 news. But what if the children had cameras? And the ability to show their accomplishments, their successes and their viewpoints? Truly powerful stories told through the children's eyes, presenting to society a new way to see then - the children who live in this neighborhood! Self-esteem would be bolstered as it often is when children get to view themselves! Not every story would be happy, but every story would be authentic. Documenting their own lives gives the children the power to tell their story - to offer a counter-culture narrative that would at last offer an alternate view than what is being presented in and through the media. Cameras, studio light umbrellas, etc. would help the students do this.

Again, we're empowering the children through art, but quality equipment costs.

Public education funds are unable to equip schools with the type of equipment that donations can garner. Colleges have studios - and how inspiring would this be if there was a small studio in an elementary school- for the specific use of the children to tell their stories! This might awaken an interest to pursue journalism, broadcasting, public speaking, news casting, or any of the many professions associated with media.
