My Students

I love my students and I love teaching mathematics.

I teach curious and energetic 6th grade mathematicians in Queens, NY.

My students come from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds. In fact, we are recognized as one of the most diverse schools in the nation!

Through an authentic project-based interdisciplinary curriculum, my students engage in learning expeditions, where they explore issues that affect their community and creating solutions as the “agents of change.”

As a teacher, my goal is to create an equitable classroom where all students see themselves as mathematicians who are capable of creating, investigating, and discovering. I invite my students to experience the world, ask questions, seek answers, and support them in understanding their community and the world’s complexities.

My Project

Help me support my students to be mathematicians in remote learning with an iPad as a document camera, an iPad case, and an Apple Pencil.

My goal as a math educator is to create and provide space for our students to discover patterns, make connections, invent and test their mathematical ideas with others.

Remote learning has placed constraints on what students are able to do in a mathematics classroom. However, my co-teacher and I are determined to find creative ways to facilitate a learning space where students share their mathematical thinking, collaborate and invent mathematics in a community with others.

Our class needs one iPad and a pen. With the iPad and pen, I will be able to use a virtual whiteboard to annotate and display student thinking, use it to mirror the computer screen and use as document cameras while facilitating small group and whole group discussions. With the iPad, students can also access virtual manipulatives and I can display and mirror student thinking virtually.

The iPad and pen will allow remote learning to be more student centered, as I will be able to capture students’ ideas and display them in ways other students can interact and engage with. It will help my students see themselves as mathematicians who are capable of creating, inventing and discovering, and in the process find and appreciate the beauty of mathematics, even in remote learning!
