This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Social-emotional learning (SEL) plays a crucial role in supporting the holistic development of students.

In my classroom, fostering an environment where students feel emotionally safe is as important as academic instruction.

SEL equips students with the tools to manage their emotions, build empathy, and develop effective communication skills. One of the strategies I employ to promote SEL is a break area where students can step away from academic tasks when they feel overwhelmed. This space offers a calming atmosphere with comfortable seating, soft lighting, and quiet activities. It helps students regulate their emotions and return to the classroom ready to learn. Fidgets and crafting are additional supports that play an essential role in creating a classroom where emotional and sensory needs are met. Fidgets, such as stress balls or textured toys, allow students to self-regulate by providing a tactile outlet for their energy or anxiety. These small but effective tools help students stay focused while maintaining a sense of calm. Crafting, on the other hand, encourages creativity and self-expression. Whether it’s coloring, building with clay, or making simple crafts, these activities allow students to channel their emotions into productive and calming endeavors. They foster a sense of accomplishment and pride, which is vital for developing confidence and emotional resilience.

However, ensuring that my classroom fully supports SEL requires updated office supplies to keep our environment functional and organized. Items such as pencils, folders, paper, and additional storage bins for organizing materials may seem like minor needs, but they are vital for maintaining a clutter-free, welcoming space where students can focus on their well-being and learning. With these supports my goal is to create a nurturing classroom that meets the diverse emotional and sensory needs of my 5th graders, allowing them to thrive both emotionally and academically.
