My Students

Building connections between old and new knowledge helps enlighten and enhance learning. Classroom discussions help broaden my students' knowledge base about the topics and ideas we're studying. Although my students attend a Title One school, they love working together, discussing new topics, as well as making connections between what they're learning and the real-world.

My students range in abilities and languages spoken--they are diverse learners who need a variety of teaching strategies to help them learn.

They love learning and thrive for knowledge.

My Project

Previously, in schools, teachers were the ones with all of the knowledge...the givers of the information where students were compliant learners. In this technological age, the tides are turning. We are preparing students for jobs that don't exist yet and we, as teachers, need to engage students in new, innovative ways.

My students are already using YouTube and the cameras on their phones to create videos based on their interests and their possible careers.

Using their expertise in technology and knowledge of the curriculum, the students will use the 2 Apple iPad devices with cases to create student tutorials and capture the growth of their own work through digital portfolios. The student tutorials will be viewed in class or at home via Google Classroom, to help with classwork, homework. The digital portfolios will act as a way to monitor student growth over time and support each other through teacher and peer feedback.

Student engagement will improve since students need to prove that they are knowledgeable in the subject matter via exit slips, assessments, and conversations prior to creating the tutorials and portfolios. Tutorial outlines will be created to show the steps of the selected standard, as well as plan for possible student misconceptions and how to help students tackle these hurdles. Deeper thinking and rich discussions will occur prior to the tutorials by the students making the videos; the students viewing the tutorial will have the benefit of revisiting standards and discussing concepts that prove to be difficult for them.

Student achievement is measured through the portfolios. They are a way to document the steps taken to improve their work with the given feedback along the way. Everyone has a chance to share their work and their accomplishments.
