This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The items I'm requesting will be used to provide our amazing scholars different opportunities to not only learn healthy coping skills, but to also empower and educate them on the power of the mind by teaching them how their brains function. As a school social worker on campus one of my biggest roles is to create learning opportunities regarding the importance of mental health for both students and staff. The Scientific Human Brain Model is a perfect example of how we can utilize an actual realistic model of the brain and couple it with the fascinating emerging field of neuroscience to teach individuals and groups of people on how different areas of the brain are impacted when we engage with certain activities. I firmly believe that to see is to believe and that is one example of what I hope to use some of these tools for, to empower students and staff to see that they can take control of their mental health.

As we continue to have a shortage of mental health providers across the nation, rural communities are impacted the hardest.

Currently, our school is located in a rural part of the country, Yuma, AZ. In a recent research study by Mental Health America titled, The State of Mental Health in America, Arizona ranked 2nd to last (50/51) in the prevalence of mental health challenges and access to mental health. While this is very alarming, it also means that we must address young people's mental health using different resources. These tools will serve as part of those resources. Tools such as fidgets, coloring books, play therapy sand trays, and reading books will all be used as resources to support our young people with their mental health.
