My Students

Our school is a very diverse population, which includes many recent immigrants from various South Asian countries. Our students’ population are identified mostly as Asian; Asian/Pacific Islander; and White, non-Hispanic. 9% of the students are "limited in English proficiency.” Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our city. Approximately 70% of our students are receiving a free or discounted lunch, making our population, the highest percentage in our geographic district.

As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics, which makes a wonderful melting pot of disparate skills.

Skills that many of my students possess, and some waiting to be tapped. We have honor classes on each grade level, as well as general and special education classes, where we serve students with a range of disabilities, such as learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, intellectual disturbances and autism spectrum discord.

Our students always find time to give back by participating in cultural events and community service opportunities such as coat drives for the homeless or food drives for City Harvest, jeans for teens and pennies for cancer. They are hardworking, determine supportive, young people who deserve only the best possible opportunities.

My Project

The reason behind this request stems from the feedback I received from some students in a higher grade after we completed their projects. During their project, the excitement that I witnessed was very fulfilling to me as a teacher, and the parental feedback was even more satisfying.

Given that the only recording device we have was the iPad and our space was in the classroom and hallways, the quality of the sound/audio effects was not the best, which lead to a large percentage of my students feeling disappointed at the final output of their projects.

When they were presenting their movies to the class, I overheard a group saying “it would be nice to have a camera to record with the next time instead of the iPad.” After hearing this, I began to wonder how many students in my other classes felt that way. I made it a point to ask, and to my surprise, many of them expressed the same desire. With this knowledge, I decided that I will do everything in my power to make their wishes come true.

To avoid this problem from occurring in our future multimedia assignments this year and in the years to come, I am creating this project with the high hopes that my students, our future film writers, and directors, will be funded to receive a Video Camera and Microphones, to enable them to create the most professional videos, which will eventually, help to eliminate those feelings of disappointments, and most importantly to help them establish a career they might be considering in their futures.
