My Project

Our school has a unique classroom model in which there are 90 students in a "pod" and three teachers that share teaching duties for those students. The pod consists of 2 conjoined, larger rooms, with 3 small group rooms attached. We strive to individualize education for each student, pinpointing their unique needs and placing them in a group to meet those needs. Due to these factors, our daily schedule includes these groups rotating through different classes in the pod. We encourage students to take ownership of their learning by setting goals with each student, checking in with them to review their progress twice a month, and helping them learn to make smart choices that facilitate their learning and growth. One way we love to give students choice and ownership is through flexible seating. Students are free to choose a seating option that they recognize is beneficial to their individual learning style in each rotation. With 90 students, this can become difficult to provide adequate types as well as quantity of seating. The flexible seating options within this wish list not only provide seating for 50 students, but they can be used in different seating configurations. They can use these seats with different styles of lap desks, at floor tables, or with a clipboards. These options also give students the choice of working closely with others, or sitting in a quiet space to promote concentration. Flexible seating helps increase productivity in class, encourages students to engage in learning, and promotes a positive class environment in which all students have the best chance at success.
