We have a brand new leadership class at our school that is trying to combine traditional elements of student government (dances, social events) with very real student engagement in issues that are important to them. This year, the leadership class is working on a campaign to improve the food at our school. They have identified an issue, written demands, created an action plan to get those demands, and are working towards taking the first steps of their action plan.
The students hate the food here. The meals are entirely microwaved, processed, and often purchased at least a year in advance and frozen. Most of our students eat both breakfast and lunch at school, and these limp hot dogs and soggy fries covered in cheese made from powder are often the only meals they get in a day. We have many obstacles to face in our campaign: school district policies and a budget crisis to name a couple.
Our students have brainstormed and strategized ways to rally the community to support our cause. In order to publicize and build public momentum, my students really want to make professional-looking buttons that will have slogans like, "Would YOU eat this?" and "Got nutrition?" with pictures of the greasy chimichangas and fried french toast sticks.
Our leadership class tackles a different campaign each year, and the button-maker will be used each time. I believe having professional supplies will give credibility to our cause and instill some pride in our students. Although it may seem small, this is a chance to empower the students who have identified this campaign and strategy and are asking for materials so that they can take action.
