My Students

Directly in the center of a major urban center, surrounded by noisy streets and busy vendors, you can find our small, four floor building high school. Inside there are over 100 middle schools students who are working relentlessly, and are looking for a new way to bring our humanities class to life.

With a lack of supplies, it has become difficult to incorporate new media for learning in the classroom.

We have one computer lab on the first floor, but because of space issues and over-sized classrooms, it is always occupied. Many of the computers are outdated or are not working. I want to take my humanities instruction to the next level and incorporate multiple forms of art, allowing students to express themselves in a variety of ways. Empowering students through art will bring our humanities personal narrative project to life. We want to connect with other students around the world and gain their opinions and expertise on the literature. A computer in the classroom would grant students the ability to conduct research, create typed reports, and gain confidence with technology.

My Project

Students will capture settings on camera that speak to their own sense of history and will use classroom art supplies to tell their story through drawing, printed photographs, and graphic design. These materials will allow students to create using all mediums, and will also allow students to create music and/or video to accompany their personal narrative. Once students have shared their personal history, we will begin to dive into the history of those before us. Students at the end of the year will be able to revisit one of the artistic mediums we used, this time telling another persons story.

This technology would open new avenues for our students who often see art as child's play.

It's important for these students to express themselves though, so empowering students through art has never been more important.
