Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a special education teacher at the Utah State Hospital, I am responsible for ensuring our students' educational needs are met using programs that are not always accessible, such as the school Chromebooks. Chromebooks pose limitations as they do not support the necessary assessment programs, and they are hindered by our stringent security measures.
I am advocating for the introduction of a dedicated student computer, securely configured, that would facilitate seamless access to required programs, allowing effective assessments and digital instruction within the high-security environment my students are in.
I need the ability to design adaptable lessons that the students can access without having to use a teacher’s computer, as they have less stringent security measures on them. The students would benefit from the usage of this computer as it will allow for enhanced learning opportunities, individualized learning, improved engagement, and real-world development.
My students are resilient individuals who have faced some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable. Their presence at this facility is a result of their mental health struggles, placing them in the most restrictive environment. Unfortunately, these remarkable young people are unable to return home or engage in regular social interactions. The nightly opportunity to sit and connect with their family members is not part of their current reality.
As an educator, I and my co-workers, play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the confined environment these students are in and the real world. We aim to expose them to authentic scenarios and situations that will contribute to a healthier mental state, preparing them for reintegration into society.l Recognizing the potential for motivational learning, it is essential that these students have access to opportunities facilitated by a dedicated computer offering a valuable avenue for enhanced learning and skill development.
