Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Art at my school is reserved for seniors. In fact, all electives classes are reserved for seniors, which means being a freshman can be very boring. It's my job, as a teacher, to make school engaging, accessible, and educational. Which is why I want to use art to teach English and Social Studies.

My students are from all five boroughs of New York City, but they are not from the fancy gentrified parts many people think of when they imagine NYC.

The majority are supported by government aid programs, receiving free lunch, and subsidized housing. My students have duties that expand beyond homework and school and at times pull them away from education. Yet, in order for them to improve their socio-economic status, school is vitally important and students must be motivated to come (insert: one of my jobs; getting kids in school regardless of outside factors). Making lessons and everyday school engaging and educational is the first step to helping my students through high school. I aim to do this every day, making school a fun, safe, and healthy haven for every student. Support from donors like you allows me to creatively engage and educate. I truly believe we are helping each student better themselves and as a result, improve their futures.

My Project

The resources for this grant will be used in various artistic ways. First, the masks, paint, tape, easel pads, staples, glue, gemstones, feathers, etc. will be used to create Renaissance masks. Students will immerse themselves into the Venetian mask making culture of the 1500s as we read Romeo and Juliet. The students will use their mask to act out the ball scene of Romeo and Juliet to fully engage and experience the text via art. Secondly, the students, in their Social Studies classes, will use the canvas, paint, paper, etc. to create masterpieces of art experimenting and connecting with the Social Studies content, exploring what it truly means to be a "Renaissance Man".

This project will improve my classroom and my students' lives because it encourages students to use art to express themselves while still connecting with English and Social Studies Common Core content.
