The Special Education program at this Montessori School aims to create an inclusive and compassionate learning environment for all students, particularly those with sensory processing challenges. To address these needs, a sensory room will be created to provide a calming and supportive space. This project focuses on teaching compassion and fostering empathy among students.
Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of others by engaging in activities that simulate sensory experiences of their peers using the sensory room.
These activities include wearing noise-canceling headphones, using weighted blankets, and experiencing dimmed lighting. Class discussions will help students articulate how these sensory inputs made them feel and why some peers might need such accommodations.
The sensory room project will also involve a peer support program where students volunteer to assist those who need the sensory room. This may involve helping peers transition to the room, setting up sensory activities, or providing companionship. Students will also participate in service projects to create sensory tools, such as stress balls, organizing sensory bins, or crafting calming visuals.
To measure success in students' understanding of compassion, a combination of surveys, observations, and student reflections will be used. Surveys will gauge students' perceptions of peers with sensory needs and their willingness to offer support. Behavioral observations will observe students' interactions and behaviors, noting increases in supportive actions towards peers using the sensory room. Student reflections will be analyzed for growth in understanding and empathy.
In conclusion, the creation of a sensory room will transform the school environment, fostering a culture of understanding, inclusion, and care. Supporting this project will help build a community where every student feels valued and understood.
