Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 9th grade students are eager to learn more about their identity and constantly seek answers to what their individual purpose actually is. They are desperate to talk about relevant and engaging topics they face daily. My students have a growth set mentality and challenge themselves to reach our class’ high expectations.

One of my students said the following, “From time to time I think about how you invited me to move to your honors class, and it always brings a smile to my face!

First of all THANKS, Mrs. M. for making school an awesome experience! And for believing and motivating me to join English Honors. It was a great experience I will never forget. You will forever be one of the best teachers I ever had!” I love helping my students reach goals they never knew they could achieve.

My Project

My students are 67% white in a conservative district in Orem, Utah. These students are eager to diversify their learning experience by approaching engaging texts through the lenses of empathy. Students will be exposed to characters who are racially and culturally different but share common life experiences.

Unfortunately, our media center lacks access to an abundant amount of diverse literature.

I will start each day by reading an engaging excerpt from one of these books, and having students write a connection they've had with characters in the book. Students will practice reading, writing, and empathizing with those who seem different than them at first glance. With these books, students will understand that, even though we may come from different backgrounds, we all share the human experience of sorrow, joy, and loss.
