Empathy, Love, and Change Through Literacy

Help me give my students an opportunity to hear the voices of kids just like them from all around the world. Help them see themselves and build empathy beyond our classroom walls.

My Project

Teaching empathy, compassion, and positive change is one of my biggest passions in my third grade classroom. I have learned over my last ten years of teaching that the most meaningful way for children to understand someone, a culture, or a language different than them, and to build love and empathy is through books.

Through diverse books, children have the opportunity to gain understanding, empathy, and compassion as well as see themselves in the pages they turn.

I truly believe the more children learn about others, the better they learn about themselves and begin to grow empathy, compassion, and the desire for positive change in the world around them.

My third graders deserve to have titles of books available to them that not only appeal to them as readers but also written by a diverse group of authors sharing the story of the human experience. I teach my students a love for literacy, books, but most of all humans. I will use these books during our class read alouds to amplify diverse cultures and experiences, as supplemental to our daily curriculum to provide multiple voices alongside content, and for students to read by choice.

Thank you for considering donating to not only diversify my classroom library but to help cultivate empathetic young citizens ready to identify injustices around them and create positive change in our world.
