This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a Spanish one way bilingual immersion program.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

As a Title I school providing books and getting them into children's' hands is always a priority. Books are a great resource for students to learn from each other's different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Social-emotional development and building empathy within a classroom community is essential in building a safe space and environment for student learning. Books are a great resource in building such a foundation. Books give great examples and illustrations of what cultural diversity looks like and they start conversations about what empathy looks like.

Our students' social worlds are changing and books are a great resource for fostering that changing world.

Learning empathy allows our students to understand each other and respect each others' feelings. Moreover by creating a space of empathy students become better communicators of their own feelings. We hope to explore the world of cultural diversity and develop our empathy through the books requested.
