Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are an incredible group of 6th graders from the vibrant Fruitvale community in Oakland, CA. They are inquisitive, passionate, and eager to learn. Some are voracious readers, while others are just beginning to discover the magic of books. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with engaging literature that sparks discussion, fosters empathy, and nurtures a lifelong love of reading.

My Project:

I am requesting a class set of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton—60 copies so that each student can have their own book. This timeless coming-of-age novel resonates deeply with middle schoolers, addressing themes of identity, belonging, and social justice.

With a full class set, my students will be able to engage with the text in multiple meaningful ways:

- Whole-Class Read-Alouds – We will read and analyze the novel together, building fluency, comprehension, and discussion skills.

- Annotation & Close Reading – Having their own copies will allow students to highlight key passages, take notes, and deeply engage with the text.

- Socratic Seminars & Group Discussions – Students will explore themes like identity, stereotypes, and loyalty through rich, thought-provoking conversations.

- Writing & Reflection – From journal responses to essays, students will make personal connections to The Outsiders and the world around them.

The Impact:

Reading The Outsiders together will not only strengthen literacy skills but also create a shared experience that builds classroom community. For many students, this could be the first book they truly connect with on a personal level. Your support will ensure they have the tools to engage deeply and critically with literature, fostering a love of reading that extends beyond the classroom.
